Diagnosis of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome, which involves the compression of the posterior tibial nerve as it passes through the tarsal tunnel on the inner side of the ankle, can be tricky to diagnose. Diagnosis typically begins with a physical examination where a podiatrist, or foot doctor, evaluates the foot for signs of nerve compression. The podiatrist may use specific tests that could provoke symptoms. To confirm the diagnosis and eliminate other potential conditions, magnetic resonance Imaging, or an MRI scan is commonly used. An MRI can provide clear images of the soft tissues surrounding the ankle, helping to identify any abnormalities like tumors, varicose veins, or structural deformities compressing the nerve. The treatment strategy may vary depending on MRI findings. For example, if the MRI reveals a structural anomaly compressing the nerve, surgical intervention may be required to alleviate the pressure. However, if inflammation is mild and no significant anatomical issues are detected, more conservative treatments like corticosteroid injections or custom orthotics might be effective. For proper diagnosis of tarsal tunnel syndrome and the most effective treatment plan, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome can be very uncomfortable to live with. If you are experiencing tarsal tunnel syndrome, contact one of our podiatrists of Foot and Ankle Clinics, PA. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome, which can also be called tibial nerve dysfunction, is an uncommon condition of misfiring peripheral nerves in the foot. The tibial nerve is the peripheral nerve in the leg responsible for sensation and movement of the foot and calf muscles. In tarsal tunnel syndrome, the tibial nerve is damaged, causing problems with movement and feeling in the foot of the affected leg.

Common Cause of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Involves pressure or an injury, direct pressure on the tibial nerve for an extended period of time, sometimes caused by other body structures close by or near the knee.
  • Diseases that damage nerves, including diabetes, may cause tarsal tunnel syndrome.
  • At times, tarsal tunnel syndrome can appear without an obvious cause in some cases.

The Effects of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Different sensations, an afflicted person may experience pain, tingling, burning or other unusual sensations in the foot of the affected leg.
  • The foot muscles, toes and ankle become weaker, and curling your toes or flexing your foot can become difficult.
  • If condition worsens, infections and ulcers may develop on the foot that is experiencing the syndrome.

A physical exam of the leg can help identify the presence of tarsal tunnel syndrome. Medical tests, such as a nerve biopsy, are also used to diagnose the condition. Patients may receive physical therapy and prescriptive medication. In extreme cases, some may require surgery.

Using Foot Biomechanics to Diagnose Problems

There is a complex interplay of structures in the feet that provide stability, balance, and propulsion during walking and other activities. Bones, muscles, ligaments, and tendons work together in the feet to move the body biomechanically. Assessing normal foot biomechanics helps podiatrists, or foot doctors, diagnose and treat various foot issues. By using their knowledge of normal foot biomechanics, podiatrists can identify abnormalities or dysfunctions that may contribute to foot problems, such as flat feet, high arches, bunions, or plantar fasciitis. Podiatrists may analyze a patient's gait, foot structure, and range of motion. This allows them to develop personalized treatment plans that may include orthotic devices, exercises, footwear modifications, or other interventions to address underlying biomechanical issues. If you are suffering with abnormalities in gait, range of motion, or the feet in general, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for a personalized treatment plan.

If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Foot and Ankle Clinics, PA. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Biomechanics in Podiatry

Podiatric biomechanics is a particular sector of specialty podiatry with licensed practitioners who are trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and lower leg. Biomechanics deals with the forces that act against the body, causing an interference with the biological structures. It focuses on the movement of the ankle, the foot and the forces that interact with them.

A History of Biomechanics

  • Biomechanics dates back to the BC era in Egypt where evidence of professional foot care has been recorded.
  • In 1974, biomechanics gained a higher profile from the studies of Merton Root, who claimed that by changing or controlling the forces between the ankle and the foot, corrections or conditions could be implemented to gain strength and coordination in the area.

Modern technological improvements are based on past theories and therapeutic processes that provide a better understanding of podiatric concepts for biomechanics. Computers can provide accurate information about the forces and patterns of the feet and lower legs.

Understanding biomechanics of the feet can help improve and eliminate pain, stopping further stress to the foot.

Who Gets Foot Pain

Foot pain can affect anyone, regardless of age or activity level, and can stem from various causes. Plantar fasciitis, the inflammation of the tissue connecting the heel bone to the toes, often results from overuse or improper foot mechanics, leading to stabbing pain in the heel. Bunions, bony bumps that form at the base of the big toe, can cause discomfort and difficulty walking due to pressure on the joint. Turf toe, an injury to the ligaments surrounding the big toe, commonly affects athletes and results from hyperextension during activities like running or jumping. Treatment for foot pain typically involves rest, stretching exercises, and wearing supportive footwear. In severe cases, custom orthotic devices or surgical intervention may be necessary. Podiatrists specialize in diagnosing and treating foot ailments, offering personalized care plans tailored to each patient's needs. If you want to alleviate existing foot pain, correct foot deformities, or prevent future injuries, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist to help you restore and maintain foot health.

Considerations for Choosing Running Shoes

Selecting the right running shoe involves considering several factors to ensure optimal support, comfort, and injury prevention. The first is your foot type, such as flat feet, high arches, or normal arches. You may also have a certain gait pattern, which is how your foot moves when you walk or run. Some people have feet that roll to the outside or inside, and certain shoes address this. Another consideration in choosing running shoes is the type of running you'll be doing. The right shoe should provide adequate cushioning to absorb impact, support tailored to your foot's arch type, and a comfortable fit for natural foot movement. Podiatrists can help you to understand all of the factors in this selection process. With their expertise in foot mechanics and conditions, podiatrists can perform a comprehensive evaluation of your feet to recommend shoes that match your needs. For example, they can conduct a gait analysis to recommend the right shoes for the way you walk. They can also identify any underlying issues that might affect your choice, such as pronation concerns or the need for custom orthotics. If you are in the market for new running shoes, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist to find shoes that will maintain your foot health and optimize your running performance.

You should always make sure your running shoes fit properly in order to avoid injury. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists from Foot and Ankle Clinics, PA. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Choosing the Right Running Shoe for Your Foot Type

Improper shoe sizing can cause a myriad of problems for your feet. Shoes that don’t fit you properly can lead to muscular imbalances in your body, which can result in foot, knee, and hip injuries.

Tips for Finding the Right Running Shoe

  • Make sure you have a thumb’s width of wiggle room between the end of your longest toe and the front of the shoe.
  • There should be little to no slipping at the heel
  • Don’t assume your size in one shoe brand will be your size in another
  • Do not lace up your shoes too tightly
  • Walk around in the store with your new shoes before you buy them

Heel Pain Can Be Treated!

Do you suffer from heel pain when you get up in the morning? If so, you should seek the professional help of your podiatrist and have a proper diagnosis performed. Heel pain can be caused by several different foot-related conditions.

Ankle Joint Replacement Surgery for Arthritis Relief

Joint replacement for ankle arthritis is a surgical option for those suffering from severe arthritis in their ankle. The point of the replacement surgery is to relieve pain and restore the function of the ankle. Arthritis is characterized by the breakdown of cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. During ankle joint replacement surgery, also known as ankle arthroplasty, the damaged parts of the ankle bones are removed and replaced with artificial components. These components mimic the natural movement of the ankle, offering patients the chance to regain mobility. This procedure is considered when less invasive treatments have failed to provide relief. It is also considered mostly for older, less active patients. Joint replacement can significantly reduce pain and improve the ankle's function, making it a valuable treatment option for those with advanced ankle arthritis. If you are suffering from arthritis in the ankle, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist to discuss whether ankle replacement surgery is right for you.

In certain cases, in which the patient suffers from extreme pain or damage in a joint, joint replacement surgery may be deemed useful. If you have constant pain in a foot joint, consult with one of our podiatrists from Foot and Ankle Clinics, PA. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

What Is Joint Replacement Surgery?

Over time, joints wear down; this can be exacerbated by diseases and conditions. Joint replacement surgery, also known as arthroplasty, is when a damaged joint is surgically removed and replaced with a prosthesis. Prostheses, which can be made of ceramic, plastic, or metal, act as joints in lieu of an actual joint. One of the most prevalent causes for joint replacement is arthritis.

Arthritis in the Foot

Arthritis can occur in any joint in the body, including in the feet. Common types of arthritis in the foot are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. The big toe is usually where arthritis occurs in the foot; this is known as hallux rigidus.

Joint Replacement Surgery in the Foot

The most common form of joint replacement in the foot is a first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint placement. MTP joint replacement surgery is designed to treat hallux rigidus. Surgery is not intensive, and recovery occurs within one to two months after the procedure has been done. Overall, joint replacement surgery is a safe and effective way to treat pain in the joint of the foot.
